The complete transaction flow

Here's exactly what happens from the moment a buyer discovers food to the moment the cook gets paid.

1

🛒 Buyer finds a listing

The buyer opens CookNextDoor and sees nearby food listed within 1 km. They can filter by food type, dietary needs, and price range.

What buyers see on a listing:
  • Cook's first name + neighborhood (e.g. "Auntie Siti · Tampines")
  • Food name, photo, price per portion, portions available
  • Dietary tags (Halal, Vegetarian, etc.) and cook's rating
  • Estimated pickup window (e.g. "Ready by 12:00 PM today")
2

🙋 Buyer reserves a portion

The buyer taps "Reserve" and selects how many portions they want. The portion count is immediately deducted from the listing.

At reservation, the buyer provides:
  • Number of portions (max = what cook listed)
  • Preferred pickup time window
  • Their verified name and contact number (shared only with cook)
3

🔔 Cook gets notified instantly

The cook receives an SMS + app notification with the buyer's name, number of portions, and requested pickup time.

The cook then:
  • Accepts or declines the reservation (within 30 minutes)
  • If accepted: confirms the pickup time and exact pickup spot via chat
  • If declined: portions are released back and buyer is notified
4

💬 Coordinate the meetup via chat

Both parties use the in-app chat (or WhatsApp-style link) to confirm the exact pickup time and location. The cook's full address is only revealed at this point.

Typical chat messages:
  • "Hi, I've accepted your reservation for 2 portions of Biryani."
  • "Pickup at Blk 123, void deck, near the letterboxes. 12:30 PM works?"
  • "Great! I'll be there. Paying by PayNow, is that OK?"
5

🚶 Buyer walks to the pickup spot

The buyer arrives at the agreed time. No delivery, no waiting for a driver — just a quick walk to a neighbor's block.

Pickup tips for buyers:
  • Arrive on time — cooks have schedules too
  • Bring your own container if the cook mentioned it
  • Have payment ready (PayNow, PayLah, or exact cash)
  • Your reservation ID confirms you're the right person
6

💸 Payment is made directly to the cook

No platform takes a cut. Payment is handled directly between buyer and cook using any of the methods below.

7

🤝 Food is handed over

Cook hands the food to the buyer. Both confirm the transaction is complete in the app with a tap.

Cook tips for a great handoff:
  • Pack food securely — even for a short walk
  • Label the portions if multiple buyers are coming at different times
  • Mention reheating instructions if applicable
8

⭐ Both parties leave a rating

After pickup, both the buyer and cook are prompted to leave a quick star rating and optional comment. Ratings are public and build community trust.

FAQ

Common questions

Things people ask us most about how CookNextDoor works.

What if the cook cancels after I reserve?

If a cook cancels, your reservation is released and you'll be notified immediately. No payment was made yet (payment only happens at pickup), so there's nothing to refund. You can immediately browse other nearby listings.

What if I'm late for pickup?

Message your cook in the app as soon as you know you'll be late. Cooks are people with schedules — being considerate goes a long way. If you're more than 30 minutes late without notice, the cook may cancel the reservation.

Do I need a container?

Each cook sets their own packaging. Some provide containers (included in the price), others ask you to bring your own. This is usually mentioned in the listing or chat. Bringing a bag to carry the food is always a good idea.

Can I order from a cook outside my 1 km area?

No — CookNextDoor is strictly hyperlocal (1 km radius). This ensures freshness, convenience, and that the community feel stays real. If you want more options, check back later as more cooks join near you.

Is there any fee or commission?

Zero. CookNextDoor is completely free for both buyers and cooks. No listing fees, no commission, no subscription. The cook sets the price and keeps every cent of it.

What if the food is not what I expected?

Since payment happens at pickup, you can choose not to pay and not to take the food if something seems seriously wrong. That said, home cooking naturally varies — minor differences are normal. Use the rating system to give feedback and help the community.

Is CookNextDoor legal in Singapore?

Home cooks in Singapore selling food in small quantities fall under the category of cottage food businesses. We recommend checking the latest SFA (Singapore Food Agency) guidelines. CookNextDoor supports compliance and will provide resources to help cooks stay within guidelines.
